Last week at the SONY BMG Global Management Meeting in Las Vegas, Clive Davis presented Barry Manilow, who headlines at the Las Vegas Hilton, with a plaque celebrating career sales of 75 million albums. 2006 was a record year for Manilow - THE GREATEST SONGS OF THE FIFTIES, Manilow's first album to debut on the Billboard charts at #1 quickly became a platinum-plus seller. Its follow-up just nine months later, GREATEST SONGS OF THE SIXTIES, was certified gold within just one month of its street date, and his best-selling greatest hits collection, ULTIMATE MANILOW (Arista, 2002) was just certified double platinum at the end of 2006. Barry returns to the Hilton Theater May 15-19.

Jim Klosty, shift manager for the Las Vegas Hilton poker room, takes over as host of “Poker, Straight From The Hilton,” from Rodd William Stowell, who launched the popular show last year. Stowell is moving up north to manage several radio stations. Klosty, a frequent guest on the show, will now talk with poker experts, Marc Nelson, Hilton poker room manager, celebrities and Jay Kornegay, executive director of the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook. Vegas’ ultimate blackjack competition, for $1 million, comes to the Las Vegas Hilton beginning June 2007. “The $1,000,000 Blackjack Classic” featuresa $2,500 entry fee that gets a player into one of the Hilton’s monthly tournaments, where the total prize each month is $35,000. We’re only seven years into it but the match-up between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has become one of the biggest boxing events in years. This match could set records in many revenue areas including live gates and pay-per-view sales. The bout will take place this Saturday, May 5 in Las Vegas. Mayweather with his flamboyant personality and skill are -185 in the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook. De La Hoya is a rare underdog at +165. The match looks like it could be a long one as the oddsmakers in the SuperBook have it going 1:30 of the 12th round, the favorite at -265 and not going +225. The SuperBook also has “pick the round” and “exact prop” wagering.
There will be plenty of celebs, including Queen Elizabeth II, making a visit to this year’s 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby. All the action is taking place in Louisville Kentucky this Saturday, May 5. The field looks wide open and officials expect 20 hopefuls to fill the gate at 3:00 p.m. PST. Some of the favorites in this year’s race include Arkansas Derby winner Curlin, Blue Grass winner Dominican, Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, and Florida Derby winner Scat Daddy. The Las Vegas Hilton will be giving out official Derby Day glasses with any $20 wager on the Derby while supplies last (limit of one per person).
